1. Cardboard Puzzle Feeders (Brain Games from Delivery Boxes)
Empty Amazon boxes are pure gold for bored pets.
For dogs:
- Cut small holes or flaps in a cardboard box.
- Drop kibble or treats inside.
- Let your dog figure out how to get them out by nosing, pawing, or shaking the box.
- Level it up by adding crumpled paper or smaller boxes inside for extra challenge.
For cats:
- Cut a few paw-sized holes in a box.
- Drop treats or a crumpled paper ball inside.
- Watch the hunting instincts kick in.
Safety tip: Supervise the first few times and remove any tape or plastic. Once the cardboard is shredded into tiny bits, toss it.
2. Homemade Treats (Pantry Staples Only)
Simple, vet-friendly recipes using everyday ingredients. Always check with your vet if your pet has special dietary needs.
Peanut Butter & Pumpkin Dog Treats
- ½ cup plain canned pumpkin (not pie filling)
- ¼ cup natural peanut butter (xylitol-free!)
- 1 egg
- 1½–2 cups oat flour or whole wheat flour
Mix into a dough, roll out, cut into shapes, and bake at 350°F for 20–25 minutes until firm. Cool completely before serving.
Simple Cat Treat Option Mix a little canned tuna (in water) with oat flour to form small balls, then bake briefly until firm. Store in the fridge and use within a few days.
These freeze well, so make a batch and portion them out.
3. No-Sew Braided Tug Toys from Old T-Shirts
Perfect for dogs who love to pull and shake.
How to make it:
- Cut an old cotton t-shirt into 3 long strips (about 2–3 inches wide).
- Knot the three strips together at one end.
- Braid them tightly.
- Knot the other end.
- Optional: tie an extra knot in the middle for better grip.
That’s it. No sewing machine required. When it gets frayed or dirty, just toss it and make another one from the next worn-out shirt.
